The latest video on the channel takes us back to the 1980s, a time of major ups and downs in the world of video games, on the negative side we had the video games crash over in the US, which saw a major downturn there, but on the positive we had the rise of the home computer scene and a wide range of systems avaliable to consumers.
People were a little bit spoilt for choice when it came to selecting a home computer back then, you had your ZX Spectrum, BBC Micro, Acorn, Amstrad, Amiga and the subject of this video, the Commodore C64.
It’s weird in a way, given how home computing is now, to think of a time where the device you bought for your home computing needs was bought, not dissimilar to how a console is now, sure you could get upgrades for them but a Commodore 64 was a Commodore 64 from its release in the early 80s to its discontinuation in the early 90s, same for your Spectrum, your Amiga 500, your BBC Micro and so on.
Nowadays, you buy a PC to a specific spec, and it’s a mishmash of parts from various manufacturers, brands might produce their own machines but they tend to rotate them based on new parts coming out. I suppose the closest you might get is a MacBook or something like that?
Anyway, the C64 is a special system, touted in the Guiness Book Of Records as the best selling home computer system of all time, the C64 brought joy to millions and I was really happy to finally get hold of this one thanks to a work colleague of mine.
What I have here isn’t an original, its the TheC64 from RetroGames Ltd, so more of an emulator made to look and act like the real deal, working keyboard, loaded with games and personality, it’s a lovely look at the system!
Hope you enjoy it!
